Welcome to Design and technology! Please join us Wednesday, September 21st for Back to School Night! I am very excited to work with you as a team to ensure your student’s success and growth. We will be doing wonderful work and it is important to have a positive, productive and safe environment for everyone.
-SPECIFIC CLASS RULES-
We are working with dangerous tools and equipment so you must:
-SCHOOL RULES-
Be respectful
Be resilient
Be hard working
-MATERIALS-
1. Students must wear closed toe shoes.
2. EVERY DAY students must bring a pencil or pen.
3. At all times students must wear provided safety glasses.
-HOMEWORK-
Students will not be assigned homework specifically during the year. Though they will be expected to complete all tasks. They may choose to spend time at home working on projects. There will be vocabulary tests and skills that may require studying and practicing.
-ABSENCES-
I do not accept any late work except for the day immediately after an excused absence. If a student is absent for less than 3 days they are still expected to complete all projects as normal as well as all quizzes or skill challenges the day they return. If a student is absent for 3 or more days they are expected to find a project they would like to make at home and create it. This can be anything that is appropriate to bring to school. To receive credit, a student must bring a drawing of the project, a list of materials, the final project and 2 sentences about what they would do differently if they did the project again.

A growth mindset means students believe in their ability to learn and grow.We will be learning many new skills that students may struggle with. Being resilient is very important. Students will not be allowed to quit.
-GRADING POLICY-
60% Projects 10% Quizzes
20% Presentations 10% Drafts
Grade will be updated on Google Sheets on a regular basis so that parents and students can always see their student’s grades. If you have any questions or comments about Google Sheets or any other technology questions, please contact Mr. Wright. If you do not have a computer or the internet at home, please note that in the comments and we will work with you to get discounted technology services for your home.
-CONSEQUENCES-
Steps the teacher will take when students violate classroom or school expectations.
1. Verbal or nonverbal warning.
2. Student will be asked to stop what they are doing and take a break outside for no more than 3 minutes.
3. Parent will be called and student will be given a reflection in another classroom as well as a lunch detention.
4. Student will be sent to the administration with a referral and a 1.5-3 hour Wednesday detention.
If a student reaches step 3 once in a week and gets to step 3 again within 7 days, that student will immediately receive step 4 consequences on step 3.
Bold disobedience, defacement, serious disrespect, disruption, or endangering others will result in an immediate referral.
-OTHER CLASS POLICIES-
-COMMUNICATION-
I will be using a text messaging service called Remind to send out notifications to family members on a regular basis. Remind works like a text message. If you are limited on the number of texts you can send/receive and would like to cease receiving texts, let Mr. Wright know. If your student receives a phone call home and I can not get ahold of you in any fashion Mr. Wright will come by your house after 2 attempts at calling and/or texting. Please feel free to reach out via email or phone, but be aware that this is Mr. Wright’s personal number. If it is late or the weekend, please consider emailing instead of calling. I will do the same for you. Students will be using Google Classroom extensively. They will be asked to download the app on their phones if they can. Please support your students in making wise technology choices to make sure they are being purposeful with their use.
-FUNDRAISING-
This is a very expensive class to run.Through the support of the site and grants we have many amazing tools and supplies. We do not have everything we need to finish the year and your support would be greatly appreciated. During the year will will have a fundraising BBQ in the garden as well as a silent auction of student made projects. These funds will go directly to the class. If you would like to donate to the class, Home Depot gift cards, checks (To Oakland Education Fund), lumber (2x4’s and plywood specifically), Hardware (star head screws, bolts), and many other supplies would be much appreciated. If you have something you think we could use, just send an email, text or call Mr. Wright.

- Students are expected to promptly begin and complete all projects and assignments. They are expected to be courteous and respectful to teacher and student presentations, as well as participate in class discussions and group activities.
- Students are expected to walk into class and get to work immediately on their tasks unless instructed otherwise.
- QUIZZES: Students will be given quizzes on a regular basis to make sure they understand necessary vocabulary and skills. These quizzes will be online, through Kahoot!, and skills challenges.
- PROJECTS: Students will have running projects that they must design, draft, create, and modify. If teams finish class projects early they will be offered extension projects. Students will receive a grading sheet for each project before it is given so that all students will understand how they will be graded.
- PRESENTATIONS: Students must present their projects, information on the process they took and conclusions they reached either in person or on video.
- DRAFTING: Students will be expected to keep updated drafts of their projects as they make changes.

- Beverages (other than water), food, or gum are not allowed in class because we will be working with many things that should not be ingested.
- Coming to class tardy is unacceptable. Students who come to class late will immediately receive a detention.
- Cell phones will be used in our class. If your student has one out in class it is assumed that you allow them to use it in class and the school takes no responsibility if anything happens to their phone. If you do not want your student to use their phone in class, please inform Mr. Wright. Students will be provided with wifi in class so as to not use data.
- Students are expected to act like professionals and use their time wisely. If a student needs to use the restroom, they must ask for a pass from Mr. Wright. If a student overuses the bathroom policy, they will lose this right.
- Students and staff will be documenting classwork which will be posted on our webpage and on Youtube, thus there will be many videos and pictures taken in the classroom. The appropriate use of technology is discussed in the registration paperwork. Students are asked to not use their names or identifying information online. Please remind your students of this. If you have any issues with this, please contact Mr. Wright or the principal.
